What is a Christian missionary?

A Christian missionary is an ambassador of Christ. Each one must be yielded to the Lord, loving Him with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. Specifically, a missionary is one whom God sends through the support of the Church to the unreached. All Christians, however, are called to be missionaries of the Gospel. The Lord works through them to rescue the lost. What greater call can one answer?

What does a Christian missionary do?

A Christian missionary proclaims Jesus as Savior and Lord. Jesus made it clear that Christians are to reach out to “all the nations” (Matthew 28:19), especially those ethnic groups without a Gospel witness.

Missionaries do more than evangelism. The commission was to make disciples, not immature believers. Thus, a Christian missionary’s outreach involves evangelism, discipleship, and church planting. As a missionary, you support the religious activities of a church away from its primary location. Missionaries frequently work abroad and can be asked to travel almost anywhere in the world to preach, educate, provide health care, or accomplish other missions for the church. Despite the religious focus of missionary work, many missionaries also help construct homes, install wells, raise animals, or engage in pro-literacy campaigns. The actual travel is usually known as a “missions trip” and can last anywhere from weeks to years. Shorter missions trips typically run start to finish with no breaks, but longer trips usually ask missionaries to come back at least once a year and present a summary of activities to a congregation, board of directors, or another supervisory group.
